Last 10 Top 10 #23 of 2016
Still on my way to do a Last 10 Top 10 every 10 movies of 2016, I skipped writing texts for some, but I'm still up to date and doing them.
Watched another 10 movies, so here is another Last 10 Top 10. Have fun. (I'm going to try to do this backwards this time, so I'll start at 10 and end at the 1, I think that's not as anticlimactic).
Starting us of at Number 10 is Double Down, this months Letterboxd Movie Night watch. What can I say? It's pretty boring. BUT with a group of friends (or strangers on the internet), this movie can be quite fun. But yeah, don't watch it on your own, not worth the time.
Number 9, the Wizard of Oz. Not the good one though. I actually wrote a review for this one, you can check it out, but to put it into one sentence: It was more of a slapstick comedy that was funny sometimes, but not really, so it's my number 9.
Men in Black 2... Pretty much the same as Wizard of Oz, funny at times, but not really, but I guess it gets bonus points for at least holding my interest.
NWR, a documentary about Nicolas Winding Refn, the director of Pusher, Drive and Neon Demon. While the description sounded like a behind the scenes documentary of Only god forgives, it's really more about the titular NWR himself, about his movies, him as a person, his relationships and more. It wasn't bad, but I actually really liked the rest of my list, so it's on #07.
Age of Cannibals, a German satire about capitalism. Sadly, no humans are eaten in this movie, but I still quite enjoyed it. It's really pretty on the nose about the message, but sometimes that's the best way to go.
I really didn't know anything about Star Trek. I knew some of the characters, I knew there are 3 different series about Star Trek, and a day before watching this i watched the very first episode of the very first series of Star Trek. I then decided that's enough background information and went right into the first movie. This movie is very long. You really feel that this was made years after the show was cancelled, and that they put a lot of fanservice in the beginning, holding really long on the Enterprise, showing us every of the main characters in a long closeup "Oh wow he is back". But the story was really interesting, and something different from the Sci-Fi you get to see these days. There is no real action element in this, it's all about talking, thinking and solving problems. I really enjoyed that about it. The length of the movie and especially some of the shots that just kept on going were a little boring though, that's why it's only on my number 5.
Funny Games, the US version. I've seen the original a few years ago, so I knew what was coming. Still, this movie got me again, making me feel uncomfortable right from the beginning. I still think it's a very well done movie, but it's a little lower than the original because it's just a remake (and as a German, I had no problem with the German version).
Blinky (TM), the surprise short of the Letterboxd Movie Night, a fun little story about a fun little killerrobot. I really enjoyed this short, I actually felt bad for a machine, so that's something.
Spring is basically a slightly darker version of Before Sunrise. Two people meet in Italy and fall in love. The acting and chemistry in this movie was great, I really felt them falling in love and I just enjoyed spending time with these two characters. I had problems with some of the humor they put in the later part of this movie (without spoiling anything), but else this was a perfect movie for me. I'm surely awaiting these directors next movie.
The World's End, the final part of the Cornetto Trilogy. I haven't seen Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz in a long time and I guess I almost forgot how funny they were. The World's End is just a masterpiece of comedy, I was laughing throughout it and just had a blast watching it. This is really a movie you can casually pop in and watch and have a great time, but also watch really close and find lots of Easter Eggs and stuff like that. I really enjoyed it, and I'm all in for a good horror comedy.
So that's this weeks last 10 top 10, we'll see what I'll watch next, I wanna try and get through all the Star Trek movies, so you'll probably find some more in the next list. Hope to see you there.
The Wizard of Oz, 1925 - ★★
"Do your stuff, Wizzy!"(actual quote from the title cards)
Another take at the classic story, Wizard of Oz, 14 years before the classic we all know and love.
In this version of the story, Oz is real all the time, and Dorothy (or Dorothea) is the queen of Oz. The prime minister of Oz doesn't want her to become queen so he gets rid of her. So, just like Harry Potter, she has to live in a different world, with an uncle and aunt, on a farm in Kansas. On her 18th Birthday, she is to come back to Oz, but of course, the prime minister tries to hinder that.
In this adaptation of the story, there are no Scarecrow, Tin Man or Cowardly Lion. They are all stagehands of the farm, in costumes, hiding from the evil prime minister, which is a little disappointing.
One of these stagehands, the "Tin Man" is played by Oliver N. Hardy, best known for his movies with Stan Laurel. He is, like every character in this movie, comic relief.
In the end, this isn't the heartwarming story we've come to know and love, but a slapstick comedy with fantasy elements. Also we spend around 40 minutes on the farm, just following the various shenanigans of the stagehands as they want to marry Dorothy and hide from her uncle, their boss.
To be quite honest, I had problems following the movie because I got distracted, it really couldn't hold my interest, especially since I know and love the 1939 version.
All in all, while it not being bad and actually making me laugh a few times, this movie was not great. I actually liked that they tried a different way to tell the story, but I didn't like the version they chose. I'm rating this 2 out of 5 stars.
