Tom at the Farm, 2013 - ★★★★½

After seeing "I killed my mother" and "Heartbeats" I started to see a pattern in Dolans movies. They were character-driven love stories, not much really happens except for characters having conversations.

That is, until Tom at the Farm. Dolan colored his hair blonde and at first it feels similar. He plays Tom, whose boyfriend killed himself, so he is visiting the farm of the boyfriends family. His widowed mother did not know of their relationship, thought her son is straight. And his brother wants to keep it that way.

Feels like before, a story about gays facing problems. Sounds also like the plot of a hilarious comedy for the whole family.
Instead, Dolan turns it into a gripping thriller, keeping you on the edge of your seat. It's still very much about the characters, but this time in a horrible situation.

The acting is great, the characters are great and feel real. I really enjoyed it. I think Dolan is going places, and I'm interested to see the rest of his movies.

I'm rating this movie 4.5 out of 5 stars and a like.
