After rewatching Braindead (one of my favorite movies) I decided it's finally time to watch Bad Taste, the first full length movie by Peter Jackson.
It's about a town where everyone is gone or behaving weird. A special forces group is sent in to attack because that town is ruled by Aliens (see poster). Most of the movie is them killing the aliens and trying to survive themselves. Peter Jackson is acting in this movie, too, playing Derek, one of the special forces group, whose head is split open and he only keeps it shut with a hat, or else his brain falls out.
This is, just as Braindead, a horror comedy where the comedy derives from the over the top gross out gore and other moments. If you can't stand blood or guts, this is not for you, but if you like this sort of "comedy", you will enjoy it. Braindead feels a little low budget, even more so does Bad Taste. It was shot over weekends with mostly Peter Jacksons friends and you can see that.
The acting is okay, the characters are okay, all in all it's really just a normal low budget movie ... if it wasn't for the effects. I love practical effects, and I love when they are done well. And they are done very well. Every time Peter Jacksons back of the head opens, it just looks perfect.
Also the aliens looks great, you can see them on the poster and they just look like that.
The ending is the weirdest thing I have seen in a long time.
All in all the only thing I really can't understand is how anyone saw all of these movies and thought "This guy would be good for directing the Lord of the Rings movies." But he was.
I rate this movie 3.5 out of 5 stars and a big like, if you like old low budget movies and good practical effects you will enjoy this.
