This was probably my hardest Top 10 to rank, cause in these 10 lists I have so many great, also critically acclaimed movies. And then I also have Little Shop of Horrors, which I just love without being able to give a real reason for it.
Night and Fog just impacted me deeply. It's only 30 minutes long, but that is more than enough. It's a documentary about the Holocaust, the aftermath of it. The pictures are horrible but also eye opening. I just had to put it on my number 1.
Now to my inexplicable favorite of this Top 10: Little Shop of Horrors. Maybe it's because I was an extra in a school musical production of this movie, or because I love the backstory of the movie made by Roger Corman. Maybe it's my love for horror movies and musicals. Maybe it's just all of these things combined. But I love this movie.
Wild Tales is also crazy good. It's something you've never seen before. A few short stories, all really dark humor, all very fun. I can just tell anyone to watch this and have a good time.
Locke sounds really bad on paper. It's just 90 minutes of Tom Hardy driving a car while having phone conversations. But it's much more than that. It's a great story, interestingly told, with great acting. Also, Spiderman actor Tom Holland is in this.
Now we come to a few movies that are almost on par with the previous movies, but were just a little harder to watch. First off, Last year at Marienbad. It is well shot, interesting, the acting is good. But to be honest, I have no idea what was going on. So in this case, my own lack of intelligence put this movie down a few notches.
Berlin, Symphony einer Großstadt is just gorgeous to look at. It's a documentary showing random scenes filmed in Berlin. And all shot in 1927. I enjoyed it a lot.
Back to mainstream again. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is actually a good reboot of a franchise. Since everyone by now knows that that planet was earth all along, it's a great idea to start the new franchise on earth, show us how the apes rose to power. I really liked this.
Sein letztes Rennen is another, more straight forward, German movie, about an old man and his struggle with the retirement home system because he wants to run a last marathon. It's a touching story, makes you sad but in the end leaves you with a happy feeling. I'm really happy that old Didi Hallervorden actually got a second start in his acting career.
Meshes of the Afternoon is another weird one. Not a bad one. It was really weird and not easy to follow. But it looked great. I really enjoyed watching it, even though, similar to Last Year at Marienbad, it is hard to follow, and harder to understand, but I still liked it. I feel like I have to watch it another time, or 10 times.
Last but not least, Police Academy. It is my #10. But it is still a fun movie. I really enjoyed it. It was really funny. I can understand it got sequels. Little hard to understand how it got 10 sequels, but hey, whatever you want. This one is a classic and I can recommend it to anyone.
So this was a great 10 movies in a row, no bad ones in it. See you next 10.
