Soultaker, 1990

Watched as main feature at the Letterboxd Movie Night #10.

It happened. We watched Soul TAKOORRR!!!!
And to be honest, it wasn't even as bad as I thought. Actually one of the best non-short movies we watched in the movie night. Which, of course, isn't saying much.

Of course it is still bad and full of plot holes and bad acting. But the editing was really good. And other than that they didn't use Stairway to heaven in the soundtrack I also liked the music.

Also this movie is very quotable ... or maybe that was just because we usually watched the trailer at least 2 or 3 times before every movie on the movie night.

"Led Zeppelin was wrong, man. There is no Stairway to heaven."
No, it's an elevator.

All in all I enjoyed this more than I should. Can't rate this without using my (non-existing) credibility on letterboxd, so I will just not.

Watched as short film at the Letterboxd Movie Night #10.

This was probably one of the first viral videos in Germany, at least the first one I was aware of. Everyone had seen it. It was bloody and just so funny.

Also this is shown at real Forklift-schools because not only is it funny and gory, it's also informative and shows you the rules you should follow when driving a Forklift. If I every drive a forklift I will never let anyone climb on the forks or let them handle my machine.

Not gonna rate this but you can see, I loved it!!!

Smosh: The Movie, 2015 - ★

You can also find this review on Letterboxd

This is basically on the same level as Bat Thumb, but in this case it is feature-length...

Anthony and Ian are two normal californian tweens. While Anthony grew up and started working as a pizza delivery guy, Ian spent all his time watching youtubevideos and being a perv. One day, a video of Anthony being an idiot surfaces on Youtube and he wants it deleted before he meets the girl he loved since high-school on the 5 year high school reunion. So they go to Youtube-headquaters where Mr. Steve Youtube explains them they have to go into a portal and change the video ...

The story doesn't make sense at all. Why would he not want her to see this video? She was live there with him when he did the stupid flip and failed. So she already knew it anyway.
All in all there is not much I can say about it, I really didn't like it, it was so stupid. Of course youtube was featured and it had some youtube-people (only 4 that I know of other than the two main guys from smosh.
Ian is one of the worst characters in movies, a character-type that I hate the most in comedies, he is stupid and selfish but has all the luck. I hate when writers put those kind of characters in a movie.

There weren't many funny jokes to be honest. I usually didn't hate the videos of Smosh, I even liked some of them. But in this movie there was not one joke that made me laugh, I only laughed because I couldn't believe the stupidity of what happened on screen.

Literally nothing makes sense.

At least it is watchable, I didn't cringe all the time or simply couldn't watch it. But it is clearly aimed at those 12- year old Youtube kiddies that still write FIRST on every video they see.

I rate this movie 1 star out of 5. Don't watch it. Just don't.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, 2015 - ★★½

You can also find this review on Letterboxd

I haven't watched Spongebob in around 5 to 6 years probably. And I gotta say it feels different.

Plankton tries once again to steal the Krabby Patty formular. This time he is as close as he ever was to it, but then it suddenly dissappears. When it's gone, the post apocalypse begins. It's now in the hands of Spongebob and Plankton to get it back.

First of all, Sponge out of Water isn't a good title since he only goes out of water in the last half hour maybe, so this is as much out of water as the first movie (I think).

I loved the reference to Mad Max: The Road Warrior. When the post apocalypse breaks out suddenly everyone is wearing weird clothes and chaos is happening.

What I didn't like is that up to the last half hour Patrick, Squidward and Sandy were very minor characters, they were only on the side while it was all about Spongebob and Plankton. Even Mr. Krabs had more screentime than Sandy and Squidward and I think even Patrick. But I don't like Spongebob on his own, I want the interaction with stupid Patrick and annoyed Squidward. So that was pretty dissappointing.

On the good side when they go to land (see the poster) they soon become super heroes and I love their superpowers and looks. The scenes on land were funny and I really enjoed them, also the whole team was together again.

I loved the Cameo by the epic rap battles of history guys and also that the rap battle at the end was very ... unfitting, but I love those guys so it's alright.

All in all it was an enjoyable movie and I liked meeting Spongebob and the gang again, but it could have been much better. So I'm rating this 2.5 stars out of 5.

Planet of the Apes, 1968 - ★★★★

Week 4 of the Letterboxd Season Challenge, 60s Blockbuster Week.

I have never seen any of the Planet of the Apes movies, neither the old ones nor the reboots. So I went into this pretty blind, even though I knew the twist ending which I'm not gonna tell.

The basic plot is, a crew of 4 is, after being asleep for a long time, now landing on a planet. They don't know which planet it is but they know it is more than 1000 years from when they started. After a few days of wandering they find unintelligent humans, naked and not able to talk. Shortly after they met, they are attacked by Apes and George Taylor (Charlton Heston) is captured by them. He soon realises on this planet, Apes are like humans while humans are like animals. When they find out he is intelligent, some of them want him dead, while others want to experiment on him.

I watched a german dub with my dad, and in german dubs I feel like the voice acting can change a lot when it comes to acting, so I'm not 100% sure but for me, the acting was good, Charlton Heston did a great job being a loveable asshole. Linda Harrison was good as Nova, who didn't have to talk at all. She was very believable, I think.

I love the ape-costumes. Maybe you know that I'm a big fan of practical effects and makeup effects and that is exactly what we get here. They look awesome and to be honest, I didn't even think about that they were fake.

The story is just awesome. It feels very much like a long episode of the twilight zone, probably because it was written by the inventor of the twilight zone, Rod Sterling. There is a twist ending but not one that just happens and changes everything. I feel like if you watch the movie without knowing it, you are able to guess it before it is revealed.
Also it's one of those endings that doesn't ruin the movie for a second watch, it is still very enjoyable if you know it. I had a blast.

The action is good, especially for a movie that old.

I enjoyed the camerawork, there was stuff they don't usually do like one scene were Heston runs over the camera and it turns and films him head down.

All in all I'm glad I finally watched it, it still holds up and is lots of fun. I rate it 4 out of 5 stars.

Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life, 2010 - ★★★★

You can also find this review on Letterboxd

Another random watch on Mubi.

Gainsbourg is about the life of Serge Gainsbourg, the famous french musician, actor and movie composer. You probably know him either from writing Je t'aime moi non plus or because he is the father of Charlotte Gainsbourgh, who was actually planned to play him in this biopic. Instead he was played by Eric Elmosnino. Elmosnino did an awesome job portraying Gainsbourg through many stages of his life and he looks really similar to him.

Also in this movie is Doug Jones, playing a stereotypical jew-face I guess? Actually, he is "la gueule", so the face of Gainsbourg, actually more of his devil, the dark side, something like that.

The movie isn't a typical biopic as you might have guessed at this point. It's played over the top in some parts, has lots of comedy in it and also some fantastic elements.

Director Joann Sfar is a big fan of Gainsbourg, which helped the movie being good. And he isn't afraid to show the bad side of him, that he was cheating and an alcoholic and a womanizer. But to be honest even though I disliked the character in some parts I couldn't hate him. There was something about him that was just likeable.

This again is a sign that Eric Elmosnino is doing his best to portray him and he does it superb.
Most of the songs that are actually by Gainsbourg are re-recorded with Eric Elmosnino and other people for the female voices, but it sounds pretty close to the original.

That said, there are many of his songs played in this movie, much like a musical, he starts playing and everyone directly knows what to do, but I like this way to portray it, also because the whole movie already has some fantastical moments.
Those songs by Gainsbourg are great music, so I really enjoyed the whole score.

All in all this is a very enjoyable movie that shows the life of a great and influential musician.
I rate this movie 4 out of 5 stars and a like and recommendation to every music lover.

Gone Girl, 2014 - ★★★★

Wow what a movie.

Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) and Amy Dunne (Rosamunde Pike) are married. Nick doesn't seem too happy with Amy and on their 5 year anniversary he leaves for a talk with his sister Margo (Carrie Coon) and when he comes home, his girl is gone... a Gone Girl if you will... anyway. Very soon police and media start to think he killed her. Did he? Gotta watch the movie to know.

There are some twists and turns in this movie and even though I know one of them I still enjoyed this very much. I expected to actually not enjoy it as much because I knew a twist, but I don't think that really matters that much. It's an intriguing story and even though there are twists this is a movie made for a second watch.

The acting is great, especially Rosemunde Pike, she clearly deserves the oscar she won. Ben Affleck also did a great job but to be honest, everyone did.

The movie is crazy and what an ending. That's something you don't see often in a big Hollywood movie. But I don't wanna spoil anything.

David Fincher did a great job, as always. This movie is shot awesomely, looks great.

I only have a few problems with this movie. Even though it didn't feel too long, it still was long and I actually had to watch it in two sitting because I didn't have the time to watch it in a whole.
My second problem was there were lots of fades to black which, after some time, started to annoy me and pull me out of the movie a little bit.

All in all a great movie, 4 out of 5 stars and a like.

Amer, 2009 - ★★★★

I like to say I know some stuff about movies, especially horror movies. But after watching this movie I feel like I know nothing at all.

Of course the black gloves have something to do with the giallo genre. Sadly this is the first giallo I ever watched because almost all of them are banned.

Anyway, I didn't get this movie. At all. Everything was weird and just didn't make 100% sense. That being said, I really liked this movie. I don't know what it is, maybe because of the great use of colors, maybe because of it depicting so much with using almost no dialogue. Maybe all of the above.

I didn't understand it, especially not the ending (I think, I always do my research after writing my review) but I still enjoyed it. It's really a movie that needsnto be talked about. And a movie that needs a rewatch after just 10 minutes...
4 stars.

Simple Simon, 2010 - ★★★★

You can also find this review on Letterboxd

I just watched this movie because it will be gone from mubi in 8 hours, and I'm so glad I watched it before it is gone again.

Simple Simon, or "In space, there are no feelings" is a comedy about a boy named Simon (Bill Skarsgard (I have no idea how to put an ° on the a)) who has aspergers. He hates being touched, he hates being late, but most of all he hates change. To be honest, the only person he likes is his brother Sam (Martin Wallström). He does not really like Sam's girlfriend Frida (Sofie Hamilton), but he lives with them. After Simon behaves especially annoying, Frida breaks up with Sam. Now it's on Simon to bring order back and find a new girlfriend for his brother.

Movies portraying mental illness are always hard to pull of. One movie that successfully did this was Mary and Max, another movie was Rain Man. This movie did it too. What is important is to not make fun of the character, but to show them and maybe try to explain them. That's what this movie does very well. There are some voice over parts by Simon, explaining himself, and sometimes he even explains it to other people. And he felt genuine. I guess part of that goes to the great acting of Bill Skarsgard, not for one second I thought that it is acted.

The other actors do great jobs as well but they are overshadowed by the acting of Skarsgard.

Also this movie looks georgeous. I loved the colors, it is really bright and full of colors, somehow that's what I think of when I think of sweden, maybe thanks to IKEA. There is one other movie that had colors like this, but I cannot remember which one it was. Everything is really bright and colorful, just very pleasant to look at.

I just enjoyed this movie and it made me feel happy, even though (slight spoilers) it doesn't have the perfect Hollywood happy ending.

I am rating this movie 4 out of 5 stars and a big like and most of all, a big recommendation to every movie fan out there.

The Adventures of Prince Achmed, 1926 - ★★★½

You can also find this review on Letterboxd

I felt like trying something different after I watched Timecrimes. And what's more different to a spanish timetravel movie from 2007 than a german silhouette movie from 1926?

This is based on one of the many stories from 1001 nights, a eastern story collection. It's about the story of Achmed, a prince who is tricked into flying away on a flying horse and then has to find a way back.
As far as I know this is the first feature length animated movie ever (except for two croatian ones that are lost). Even though by todays standards you almost wouldn't call the 60 minute running time full length anymore. The runtime was the initial reason I watched it, it's a quick watch.

The story is fun, in those 60 minutes a lot happens. We get a crossover with the Aladin-Story. The djinn in this is not as great as the one by Robin Williams, but he is helpful at least.
Also I'm pretty sure this movie influenced "The sword and the stone", because there is a big fight scene between a witch and a magician who transform into different animals to fight each other. In this it's not as funny as in the disney cartoon, but it looks great.

The animation is first-class, especially for the time, some scenes stutter a bit, but the transformation scenes are stunning. There are quite a few scenes where the magician transforms into something else and it is always clear into what he transforms and it looks just like in modern animated movies.

I should mention the silhouette-technique, which could maybe throw some people off. Basically the movie is black and white, everything you see is black in front of a white (or colored) background. You don't have facial features (well, you kinda do, but not really) and you just see the silhouettes of the characters. It's pretty minimalistic but for me it worked.

Also there are not that many title cards, and if there is one it mostly has only 2 lines on it, so it's really easy to watch and doesn't feel like a book.

All in all I really enjoyed this movie and it was probably influential for this world. It's of course not really comparable to a movie of this day and age with sound and all that, but it is watchable if you are in the mood for it. I rate it 3.5 out of 5 stars and a like.

Timecrimes, 2007 - ★★★★½

Wanted to see that for some time already, never got to it until yesterday.

I'm not going to spoil too much but it's about a normal guy called Héctor (Karra Elejalde) who is followed by a man with a pink bandage around his head. He is pretty sure that guy is trying to kill him, so he ends up being saved by El Joven (played by the director, Nacho Vigalondo) by crawling into a weird machine ... and getting out of it a few hours before he got in.

I don't wanna spoil this movie because it is so much fun to watch and find stuff out yourself, or at least with the character himself. But let me say this is a smart time travel movie. Even though there always has to be some suspension of disbelieve, most of it makes sense if you believe that time travel is possible.

The guy in the pink bandage is so funny and kind of reminded me of "The town that dreaded sundown", because the killer of that movie is also "having fun".

The acting is really good, there are only 4 actors seen on screen and they all well acted. Karra Elejalde is not really what you think of when you think of a leading man, but he totally is in this movie. At first it feels a bit weird but he gets more and more awesome as time goes on.
The character makes some stupid decisions, but I guess that's needed to further the storyline.

Director Nacho Vigalondo did a great job in hiding everything, I really didn't guess anything that happened, especially later in the movie I was really cought off guard.

Also I have to say this movie is more than a "Sci-Fi Thriller". It has Sci-Fi elements, it has Thriller elements, it has Horror elements, it has comedy. It also has romance in it. So there is lots to get out of this.

All in all I really enjoyed this movie and it had lots of omg-moments.
I'm rating Timecrimes 4.5 out of 5 stars and giving it a like.

This is crazy. Is this true or fake? I don't know what to believe. But this is totally worth a watch.
To be honest I didn't even know this was made by Banksy, I just thought he was ... kinda in it, I guess?
I cannot describe this movie, but for the first hour it's a great documentary on street art and then it goes crazy.

One thing I noticed is that this movie goes full circle. It starts with "Mr Brainwash" having a shop where he sells TShirts for wayyy too much, like 100 times their worth. And at the end he does the same with "paintings". This is too good to be true, right? RIGHT????

I'm rating this 4.5 out of 5 stars and a recommendation to everyone.

The One I Love, 2014 - ★★★½

This review has some slight spoilers. I would tell everyone to watch this without knowing anything about it, as that is the most fun.

Romantic Comedy with a twist.

Ethan (Mark Duplass) and Sophie (Elisabeth Moss) are a married couple who don't like each other that much after some time. They go to a therapist who sends them to a special place that helped lots of couples in his therapy. But something weird is going on in that place. There seem to be doppelgangers of them in one house, who are the "perfect" version of them.

Mark Duplass is starting to become one of my favorite indie-actors, I saw Creep, a horror movie with him as the titular character that was inventive and new. This movie is also inventive and something new, and also starring Mark Duplass in a different role. His acting was pretty good, also because he had to play 2 characters.
Elisabeth Moss, who I only knew from Mad Men, is also very good in this, also playing 2 characters.

An impressive part, especially about the acting, is that we have scenes later in the movie with each actor playing 2 characters sitting at the same table. Since we are in the digital age it is really not that impressive anymore to put this together, but the acting is great. Usually when I watch something like this I just look at how they did it and it destracts me a little bit. But in this case it just felt so real and well done that after the first scene I didn't really care. We have a scene where Mark Duplass plays poker with himself and it just blew me away.

Also, as I said probably too much, it is very inventive, not something you usually see in a hollywood movie.
Part of this is probably because this is kind of a mumblecore movie. It got made on a low budget, there are only 3 speaking actors in this whole movie (and some phone calls but I don't count them). Most of the scenes were improvised with just a rough outline about what to say. This makes it feel more real.

I really enjoyed this movie, it's not long and was a nice movie to chill out after I watched the godfather. I rate it 3.5 out of 5 stars and a like.

The Godfather, 1972 - ★★★★★

Haven't seen this in forever, so I decided to rewatch it before I watch the godfather part 2 for next week in the season challenge.

This is a masterpiece, also a 3 hour epic. It tells the story of the Corleone family, a mafia family in America.

I don't even know what to say about this. It is epic in every way. It is fun. There is so much happening. If this movie was made this year, it would probably be three movies.
It is very long, but I enjoyed every second, wasn't bored for a minute.

The acting was great, especially of course Marlon Brando. But to be honest every actor was great.

Not much more to say about this masterpiece. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars.

Honeymoon, 2014 - ★★★★ (contains spoilers)

You can also find this review on Letterboxd

This review reportedly contains spoilers.

Great original take on an alien invasion movie.

As we all know I love low budget horror movies. So this was already a good starting point.
Bea (Rose Leslie) and Paul (Harry Treadaway) are on their honeymoon in Bea's parents cabin in the woods. In the first night Paul finds Bea in the middle of the night in the middle of the woods, naked and saying she can't remember what happened. After that she is different. And gets more and more different as time goes on.

The first thing that blew me away was Rose Leslies voice. I only knew her from Game of Thrones where she talks in a thick scottish accent (at least for my german ears). In this movie she has a (again, for my ears) perfect american accent. I just couldn't wrap my head around that.
And she is also a great actress, her acting is top notch, and Harry Treadaway is on the same level. At one point I was sure the actor went crazy because it was so believable.
Also they had a great chemistry, I really believed they were a newly wed couple. Right at the beginning there is a long take of Bea showing Paul the house and it just felt so real.

The opening is a video diary that the couple made right after their wedding, I think. It is a great way to start the movie because that way we get to know the characters and their relationship to each other. But it's not only there for this opening, it has a purpose later on.

The horror was superb. I watched it with the lights on because I was a little tired and didn't want to fall asleep, but even with lights on the movie was scary as fuck.
I just love the idea that we've seen a million times, of someone being replaced by an alien (like in invasion of the body snatchers). They look the same but they are changed. I think in this case she isn't replaced but infected and slowly changes over time.

The only downside is that I could tell instantly it's an alien invasion movie, after the first night when the light shines into her face with that typical weird sound. I felt like that was a little cliche but I didn't bother too much to be honest. Also I went into this after having just heard about this in the cinereelists podcast, where one of the hosts said it's not a supernatural movie. So right until the end I thought they were going to come up with a logical explanation for this. But I couldn't even be mad that it really was aliens.

And OH MY GOD WHEN THEY PULL THAT ALIEN THING OUT OF HER OH MY GOD!!!!

Back to normal. I think there is some deeper meaning about pregnancy, because at the beginning they talk about babies (well, Paul talks about how well he fucked her while she thinks he talks about impregnating her). And after that she changes and then they pull this ... thing out of her. Maybe Leigh Janiak, the director, is really scared of having children.

What I love about this movie, it makes you want to talk about it. There is a lot to talk and explore about it and it made me want to read reviews and write my own instantly. So now that I'm done with the review, I can't wait to read all of the other peoples thoughts on it.

I give Honeymoon 4 out of 5 stars, a like and a reccommend.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, 1966 - ★★★★½

You can also find this review on Letterboxd

This is my first entry into the Letterboxd Season Challenge.
Week one - Watching a previous unseen movie out of Roger Eberts Great Movies.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is the first real Western I have watched (I think).
It is about 3 guys, one good, one bad and one ugly, who all have the same goal: to find 200.000 dollars that some guy buried on a graveyard. The problem? Two of them know the name of the graveyard, but only one of them knows the name of the grave. So they have to work together.

First of all, this movie is very long, which was the main reason I haven't watched it for so long. And it felt long. I had to take breaks in between (mostly because I had to walk the dog) so it took me the whole day to watch this. But it was worth it.
A reason this movie is so long is because there is so much happening. The 3 titular characters don't meet until around one and a half hours in. Also they don't get that goal of 200.000 dollars until 1 hour into the movie.

I love the music, the main theme that already starts in the opening sequence. A great opening sequence by the way. It really got me into the mood for a classic wild west movie.

After that opening we have a long scene without any dialogue. Just lots of stares. The whole beginning of the movie with Angel Eyes visiting some guy and questioning him is great. It's all told through body language for the first 5 or 6 minutes. And even after that they don't use many words.
This leads into my next point, the acting is great. Lee van Cleef, who plays Angel Eyes, is great and looks like the perfect cowboy-villain.
Eli Wallach as Tuco is probably one of my favorite characters. The character is despicable but at the same time likeable, which is a bad mix. He deserves to be hanged, but at least I didn't want to see him hanged, so every time he had a rope around his neck (which happens more often than you'd think) I was not sure if he survives it.
And of course Blondie, played by the one and only Clint Eastwood. To be honest he looked worse than I expected. I always thought he was the super hero good guy in those movies but even though he is "the good" he isn't that good.
I think he kills the most people in the whole movie, and of course this is a different time and probably was normal, but he just pulls out the gun and shoots. The kills aren't bloody but still the murders are cold blooded.

Talking about him being "the good", the movie titles the characters in the beginning of the movie, Angel Eyes is the Bad, Tuco is the Ugly and Blondie is the Good. But are they really? I'm not sure about that but I don't wanna get too much into this.

This movie is beautifully shot. Every scene looks awesome, especially the landscapes are beautiful.

All in all I had a good time watching this. I had fun. I rate this movie 4 and a half stars and give it a like.

Mad Max: Fury Road, 2015 - ★★★★★

I saw this in a double feature together with Minions in a drive in theatre.

This is the first movie I watched twice in cinema. And I loved it as much as the first time. Maybe even a little more, because I now had more background infos, knew about how stuff was shot.

Also I had my car running during this movie, and watching a car chase movie while sitting in a car with the motor running just adds a whole different feel to this movie.

Still 5 out of 5 stars.

Minions, 2015 - ★★★★

You can also find this review on Letterboxd

Saw this movie in a drive-in-theatre as a double feature with Mad Max - Fury Road.

The Minions are ... beings, that were born to help evil people and throughout the ages they try to find the one to help, but always end up losing them. So 1968, Kevin, Stuart and Bob, three of the minions head out to find the one. After heading to America, they find out there is a "Villain-Con" in Orlando.

I usually don't mention this at this point in my review but I love this soundtrack. This movie is set in the 1960s so there are a lot of 60s songs, and we all know the 60s were a great time for music. I think there is only one piece of original music in this movie, in the ending credits... and I'm not sure if the song that is sung by Bob is maybe an original song too.

So, I went into this pretty blind, because to be honest, I didn't care much about it. I have seen the first despicable me years ago, never seen the second one and I thought the minions were way too overhyped. I didn't care at all, but, as I said in the opening, it was in a drive in theatre and I never was to one so I decided to go.
And I really loved it.

It was laugh out loud funny in many parts. I didn't expect to love it this much, but I did.

It was a german dub, so I can't say much about the voice acting, but the german voice actors did a pretty good job.

All in all a great comedy, not only for children but also for grown ups. I rate it 4 out of 5 stars.

A Nightmare on Elm Street, 1984

You can also find this review on Letterboxd

-------------THIS REVIEW IS FOR AN AUDIO COMMENTARY-----------------

When I heard Wes Craven, the master of horror, died, I had to rewatch his masterpiece. So I decided to put a little spin on it, so I watched it with audio commentary by Wes Craven, Heather Langenkamp, John Saxon and I think Jacques Haitkin. It was on DVD one in my 7 DVD Nightmare on Elm Street Boxset.

The audio commentary was interesting and lots of fun. I like how they chose such different people, the director, the lead actress, the biggest name of the movie (at the time) and the camera guy. So they not only talk about directing or acting, but about a good combination mixed with "how this was shot". And you could hear how excited Haitkin still was about the shooting of the movie.

My favorite part was when Heather Langenkamp told us how the scene where the mother smokes in a sleep clinic dates the movie and shows it was made in the 80s, not because of what she said but because it is followed up by Wes Craven talking about how much he likes the clarity of the film since they are watching it on Laserdisc... which of course dates the audio commentary.

Anyway, all in all this was an interesting commentary, I learnt some new stuff about the movie and heard much of the trivia I read or heard of from the #1 source, Wes Craven himself.
I'm not going to rate this commentary but if you are a fan, you should watch it.

Plan 9 from Outer Space, 1959

Watched as main feature at theLetterboxd Movie Night.

This was my birthday wish for the letterboxd movie night and to be honest, I had fun. I missed the first 10 to 15 minutes because of some mistakes with the web player, but I don't think you need to see them to fully appreciate the movie.

I don't know if this is a spoiler but I won't mark it as one. I'm going to tell you what PLAN 9 is, because that's the story. Plan 9 comes from Aliens (outer space, Ed Wood was a genious) and the Plan is to awaken the dead to ... see how humans react ... I think. Well suddenly at the end there is a message that they clearly copied in the original "The Day the Earth stood still", that humans are bad and the aliens came to stop the humans from killing themselves and everyone around them. But these aliens wanna kill every human.

The acting is ... to be honest, there is no acting. Maybe the scenes where Bela Lugosi is sniffing a flower and then running around in a cape are acting, but that's it.
Oh yeah, by the way, in case you didn't know, this is Bela Lugosis last movie ever. He died after shooting some of the scenes with his friend Ed. So Ed Wood, master of putting some story around disjoint scenes, made a movie around those scenes of Bela Lugosi.
Also in this is Elvir.... Vampira, a TV-personality of the time.
Oh and Wrestler Tor Johnson.
So all in all, a star studded cast.

The sets are pretty shitty, sometimes non-existent.

But all in all, I still had fun watching this. Maybe it's because before I've seen any of his movies, I've seen Ed Wood by Tim Burton, and I really sympathise with him. He just loves movies and makes them, if he is good in it or not doesn't matter. I feel the same way writing these reviews, I love movies and I wanna write about them, I don't care who likes them.
That's why I can't really hate on this movie.

And that is why I can't rate this movie either. I'll just leave it a like and let you decide if you wanna watch it.

Bat Thumb, 2001

Seen this as part of the Letterboxd Movie Night.

If I understand it correctly this is based on youtubevideos where the thumbs have mouths and make stupid Thumb-puns. So this is like the annoying orange but with thumbs. Sounds alright for a 5 minute youtubevideo.

Sadly this is a 30 minute short film. At the first few minutes it was funny to see a few thumb jokes. And to be honest I liked the effects and how it was made. But after those few minutes it just got boring. I didn't like most of the jokes... Also, and I wrote that in the chat, why is it the Thumb-Mobile??? That's like Batman calling it the Man-Mobile!

Also, as you maybe know by now, we watch crappy movies at the Letterboxd Movie Night. But usually, they are just bad movies while this is trying to be funny but fails miserably, so it doesn't even make as much fun to make fun of it. I actually preferred watching Plan 9 from outer space over this one.

I'm not going to rate this movie because I wanna rate it lower than Plan 9 and then nobody would believe any of my reviews ever. So no rating. Don't watch this, except maybe if you are under the age of 12, then this could be fun.
