I've got 125 unseen Horror movies in my collection as I'm writing this.

October has 31 days.

I decided I want to watch 31 of these movies in October, one each day. That's what this list is about.
I'll also try to review each of those.

They are in random order, I will pick at random or roll a dice (that's why I have this list ranked).

  1. Anguish
  2. Goodnight Mommy
  3. Gremlins 2: The New Batch
  4. 28 Weeks Later
  5. Bride of Re-Animator
  6. Mimic
  7. Maggie
  8. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark
  9. House of Wax

Cameo: The movie.

Insidious: Chapter 3, 2015 - ★★

So I guess the Insidious series is now just about Elise? And maybe about the Black Widow ghost.

I was mostly annoyed by Insidious: Chapter 2. But I decided I own it so I might as well watch chapter 3, too. It's now a prequel, so it might be a little different at least.

While I was not scared at all in chapter 2, this chapter at least has a few scary moments. Sadly it also has lots and lots of jump scares. Way to many jumps cares. And I'm sure some of them would work better if we didn't have music doing the JUMP even when nothing is jumping.

There were lots of useless characters and scenes without any real sense. The best friend character who we see for maybe 5 minutes in the whole movie doesn't add anything to the plot, neither does the hot neighbor/love interest who is gone after the halfway point without adding anything really.

Even the main character is reduced to a ragdoll after halfway through, at which point focus switches to Elise and the two nerds.

Adding to the useless scenes are all these scenes that are just there to connect the movie back to the original movies, like when Elise is telling the guys to switch up their style.

All in all I was pretty annoyed by this movie and not really scared at all. I think if a few scenes where done a little different there would be at least some scarier scenes, but sadly, they did not deliver.
2 out of 5 stars from me.

Run Lola Run, 1998 - ★★★★

As a German who never really listened to much techno music I always wondered why Americans seem to think Germany is the home of techno.

Now I know.

But even though we see Lola running for a lot of this movie, there is a lot more to it. Every character is interesting and Tykwer tells this story in an interesting way. We get 3 different outcomes to a story, each similar while also different. We get stories about background characters that only utter one word.

The movie is fast paced, and not only because Lola is running. Franka Potente does a great job portraying Lola, Moritz Bleibtreu is also great. Also all the background characters are really well acted.

All in all I really enjoyed this little movie, and with only 71 minutes, it's really well paced.I'm rating this movie 4 out of 5 stars and a like.

Starlet, 2012 - ★★★★½

I didn't know much about this movie going in, but I heard it's good. Since it was going to leave Mubi I decided to watch it.

An up and coming porn star meets an old lady and they become friends. That's the plot put into one sentence.

But of course there is more to it. The grumpy old lady opens up to the young happy girl slowly, but it doesn't feel forced. I genuinely felt for the characters and could understand why they made the moves they made.

There is one annoying character, the girl our main protagonist lives with. She is very annoying and I'm not sure any character can be that stupid/weird.

But everything else was great and felt realistic. I really enjoyed this movie and had a lot of fun and feelings.

Also, on a side note, I'm really impressed by Besedka Johnson. This was her only role, and she died shortly after the release, but she did a great job and felt genuine. Also IMDb trivia tells me she always wanted to be an actress but never made it, and if that is true, this makes me really happy.

All in all a really good movie, I enjoyed it a lot. I'm rating this movie 4.5 out of 5 stars and a big like.

Little Hercules, 2010 - ★½

You can also find this review on Letterboxd

First of all, since the official title is "Little Hercules in 3-D" I should add I have not seen this movie in 3D, so maybe that skewed my enjoyment of this movie a little.

I thought for my 300th movie of 2016 I should pick something big. Something spectacular. Something I wanted to watch for a long time. But then I said "Nah, fuck it" and watched Little Hercules.

In this movie starring Little Hercules as himself, the Big Show and the whole Hogan Clan, Little Hercules flees the Olympus and lands right in LA to become a normal boy. On earth he meets Little C, and they are off for shenanigans, mostly involving Olympic games (what a coincidence).

It's actually quite entertaining in a Letterboxd Movie Night kind of way. I have no idea why this is not one of those "so bad it's good" movies, but instead is a movie no one knows about. It stars Hulk Hogan and The Big Show, and they are even "fighting" each other on multiple occasions (sadly we don't get a Leg Drop from the Hulkster).

Story wise this movie makes no sense at all. Hogan ... I mean Zeus gives Lil Herc the opportunity to use his magic strength THREE times. And Herc uses the strength right away to show people what he can do, so for basically no reason he uses all his power and from then on is a normal boy with just the most muscular body ever. Really, he looks super creepy.

The acting is not good by any of the parties, except for Lil C. I don't know but that little guy is really smooth and I wish we could get a Little C solo movie.

So all in all even though this movie is total crap, it is a fun time when you watch it with a few friends, maybe drink a few beers and make fun of it. It should get way more attention for sure. I'm rating it 1.5 out of 5 stars, just because why not.

Drácula, 1931

I love that this movie is a.k.a. the Spanish Dracula.

I'm a big fan of Dracula and of Lugosi, and of Tod Browning. Heard many people say that this version is better. So of course I had to watch it.

And it was the truth. This version is superior to the American one in almost every way. Of course it still needs Bela Lugosi. Also I think I preferred Van Sloans portrayal of Van Helsing. I'm not sure if I prefer Dwight Frye or Pablo Álvarez Rubio in the role of Renfield. They both played crazy really well.

It's funny that they kept all the names... except for Harker, who is now Juan. Bet there are quite a few rich guys called Juan living in London.

Anyway, this was a great version of Dracula, but Lugosi will always be my favorite.

"All quiet on the western front ... yard"

I've recently been rewatching a few movies of my childhood. I've watched Jumanji. I've watched Flubber. Sadly, both of these movies do not hold up well watched today. Most problems are with bad CGI, or the movies being too much for kids. So of course I went into this movie with quite a bit of fear. Scared to ruin another childhood memory.

I was positively surprised.

Small Soldiers is about a new line of Toys that are intelligent. And they are deadly.

The characters are well done and well acted, the kids and the grown ups.

The story is original and fun. And the whole movie felt like there were stakes, I was pretty sure none of the humans died, but during watching it I wasn't sure anymore, especially because the Commandos (lead by Tommy Lee Jones) were not holding back.

Talking about the Commandos, they (and the Gorgons) were my biggest fear. Because in parts they are CGI, and 90s CGI is not the greatest. But here it held up quite well, probably because Toy Soldiers were easy to animate because of their texture.
Also, every time they interacted with characters, it were just real toy soldiers, so the transition worked.

All in all I really enjoyed this movie, it is fun for everyone and well acted. I had a fun time watching it, and I can just tell everyone to watch it. 4 out of 5 stars.

Last 10 Top 10 #24 of 2016

You can also find this review on Letterboxd

This was probably my hardest Top 10 to rank, cause in these 10 lists I have so many great, also critically acclaimed movies. And then I also have Little Shop of Horrors, which I just love without being able to give a real reason for it.

Night and Fog just impacted me deeply. It's only 30 minutes long, but that is more than enough. It's a documentary about the Holocaust, the aftermath of it. The pictures are horrible but also eye opening. I just had to put it on my number 1.

Now to my inexplicable favorite of this Top 10: Little Shop of Horrors. Maybe it's because I was an extra in a school musical production of this movie, or because I love the backstory of the movie made by Roger Corman. Maybe it's my love for horror movies and musicals. Maybe it's just all of these things combined. But I love this movie.

Wild Tales is also crazy good. It's something you've never seen before. A few short stories, all really dark humor, all very fun. I can just tell anyone to watch this and have a good time.

Locke sounds really bad on paper. It's just 90 minutes of Tom Hardy driving a car while having phone conversations. But it's much more than that. It's a great story, interestingly told, with great acting. Also, Spiderman actor Tom Holland is in this.

Now we come to a few movies that are almost on par with the previous movies, but were just a little harder to watch. First off, Last year at Marienbad. It is well shot, interesting, the acting is good. But to be honest, I have no idea what was going on. So in this case, my own lack of intelligence put this movie down a few notches.

Berlin, Symphony einer Großstadt is just gorgeous to look at. It's a documentary showing random scenes filmed in Berlin. And all shot in 1927. I enjoyed it a lot.

Back to mainstream again. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is actually a good reboot of a franchise. Since everyone by now knows that that planet was earth all along, it's a great idea to start the new franchise on earth, show us how the apes rose to power. I really liked this.

Sein letztes Rennen is another, more straight forward, German movie, about an old man and his struggle with the retirement home system because he wants to run a last marathon. It's a touching story, makes you sad but in the end leaves you with a happy feeling. I'm really happy that old Didi Hallervorden actually got a second start in his acting career.

Meshes of the Afternoon is another weird one. Not a bad one. It was really weird and not easy to follow. But it looked great. I really enjoyed watching it, even though, similar to Last Year at Marienbad, it is hard to follow, and harder to understand, but I still liked it. I feel like I have to watch it another time, or 10 times.

Last but not least, Police Academy. It is my #10. But it is still a fun movie. I really enjoyed it. It was really funny. I can understand it got sequels. Little hard to understand how it got 10 sequels, but hey, whatever you want. This one is a classic and I can recommend it to anyone.

So this was a great 10 movies in a row, no bad ones in it. See you next 10.

  1. Night and Fog
  2. Little Shop of Horrors
  3. Wild Tales
  4. Locke
  5. Last Year at Marienbad
  6. Berlin: Symphony of a Great City
  7. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
  8. Sein letztes Rennen
  9. Meshes of the Afternoon
  10. Police Academy
