Last 10 Top 10 #11 of 2016
I'll try to do a Last 10 Top 10 every 10 movies I watch in 2016. This time I was in an Easter Mood, so I watched 2 Jesus movies and a Zombie movie, perfect for Easter.
First off, probably a controversial pick, my number one is Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead. Objectively, this probably isn't better than my numbers 2 and 3, but subjectively, for me, this movie was just perfect. Just like Braindead, it is so crazy and over the top, I can't not love it. And I have to put it at my number 1.
Misery is based off one of my favorite Stephen King novels with the same name. And it has one of the best acting performances by Kathy Bates. I really really liked this and if Dead Snow didn't hit all my favorite things, Misery would have been my number 1 for sure.
I've actually seen The Truman Show as a kid with my parents. And it stuck with me ever since, but I needed to rewatch it to actually be able to remember enough. Now I finally did and I enjoyed it. It's just a great story, interesting concept and well done. Jim Carrey giving a great performance.
Tremors is really just a fun time. I expected a low budget so bad it's good movie, but instead I got a decent monster movie with good acting, great practical effects and an interesting story. I was really surprised about how much I liked this.
Many people say The Greatest Story Ever Told has such a star studded cast that it kind of distracts you. But to be honest, I'm not that big into that time frame (yet), so I didn't even recognize most of those famous people. Max von Sydown was surprisingly good as Jesus, his first English-speaking role. Sadly, with over 3 hours running time, this movie is too long and got a little tiring at some parts. I still enjoyed it for sure.
I'm still not 100% sure how I feel about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It was a fun time and some scenes were really good. The action was great, especially Batman's fight scenes. And I actually like this Batman a lot. But it had many faults, lots of things that took me out of the movie, especially lots of stupid things that really annoyed me. But it's still a movie you can watch without having to leave the cinema.
The Passion, my second Jesus "movie" for this list. But It's not really a movie, more of a live television musical. That being said, I didn't love it nor did I hate it. It had lots of great songs, and I felt that the songs also fit pretty well. Judas' Bring me to life was just awesome. What I didn't like was that they had like, 5 songs by Jesus mother Mary, singing to us about her feelings during all the stuff happening to Jesus. That really got annoying after some parts. And I was bored by the interviews with people following the illuminated cross through New Orleans, I felt like they could have cut those out.
The Arrival, my third Peter Tscherkassky movie this year, a re-edit of the Arrival of a train, one of the first movies ever. It was very short, so it's hard to rank this against normal movies, but I liked it, so I decided to put it behind the Passion, which I was fine with, but before Man of Steel, which I didn't like.
So yeah, I did not like Man of Steel. It either bored me or annoyed me, or both at the same time. I just put off watching this movie because I didn't hear many good movies about it and just watched it because we watched it as a group two days before BvS. It was stupid, nothing really made sense, and everything bored me or was too over the top. (I know I said I like over the top, but only if it is intentional and to make fun of something, not just to have more bigger explosions).
At least, Man of Steel looked good and had good acting. My last movie of this Top 10 Last 10 is No One Lives and [Spoilers ahead] the title isn't accurate. It's a WWE productions movie, so I already knew it wouldn't be good. It was just stupid and crazy, and the acting wasn't that good and I also watched a cut version, so I probably missed the best parts, because this movie is just a gore fest. That's why this is my number 10. Also because Brodus Clay was in this movie and didn't even do the Funkasaurus dance.
Soo, another 10 movies watched and ranked. These were a little more mixed, a very strong top 3, but also 2 movies I didn't like. Hope to see you next time, with hopefully even more, even better movies.
The Passion, 2016
I just wished they would sing Always look on the bright side of life.
Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead, 2014 - ★★★★★
This movie was basically made for me.
Dead Snow: Red VS Dead is set directly after Dead Snow, with Martin, the main guy, fighting the Zombies. He flees but has a car crash and wakes up in a hospital. The doctors attached the arm of the Nazi-Zombie boss to Martin, so now he has superpowers. The Nazi-Zombies are coming to take over the city. He needs to stop it with the help of three Americans: The Zombie Squad.
This alone should be enough for you to decide if you will like this movie or not. Do you like over the top action? Over the top gore? Over the top everything?
As a big fan of Braindead, the goriest movie ever made, it is no surprise that I love this movie. I'm pretty sure they got inspired by that movie.
This movie is also great because, as a sequel, it doesn't just do the same again like most horror sequels. It follows along the story, puts in new characters that you actually start to like and care about. It manages to go even more over the top while also explaining a few things from the first movie, like why they can talk and why they are smart.
I love the comedy. There is much physical comedy in this movie, done by the Zombies. And it's funny because it's over the top.
Also, there are many practical effects in this movie. Of course they touched it up using CGI, but there are many scenes that were done practically, and the Zombie makeup was also done practically.
I could go on forever about why I love this movie, but I will stop myself right here and just tell you to watch it. I'm rating it 5 out of 5 stars and giving it a big like.

Misery, 1990 - ★★★★½
I love Stephen King, and I loved the source material, the book Misery.
This movie was great. It was actually true to the book, but a little different so it wasn't boring if you read the book.
A good addition, in my opinion, was the sheriff and his wife. They brought in 2 characters that lighten the mood a little bit if needed, characters that are lovable. Also, it changed the impact of other scenes that happened later on.
The acting was great, especially Kathy Bates who clearly deserved that Oscar. James Caan was great, too, no questions asked.
Rob Reiner is a great director, I'm a little ashamed I mostly knew him as "The old yelling guy from Wolf of Wall Street". This movie was great.
I really enjoyed Misery, it's a great horror movie, no jump scares needed, no supernatural stuff happening. It's just about a situation, about people, and that is truly scary.
I rate this movie 4.5 out of 5 stars and a big like.
No One Lives, 2012 - ★★
Started this movie because the Netflix description was kind of interesting and Netflix said I'd like it around 3 stars.
It started out with the WWE Productions logo, so I knew it wouldn't be that good.
It's about a murderous family of gangsters (one of them is actually the Funkasaurus himself, Brodus Clay) who capture a couple and steal their car. In the car, they find a girl tied up in the trunk ...
It sounds like a fun premise and it isn't bad for sure. But it wasn't executed that well.
"What do you think of Room #8?"-"Oh infinity, I like it."
That's the kind of dialogue you can expect from this movie. Pretty cliche. The main guy, played by Luke Evans, had some of the worst lines, trying to pull them off as cool and smart, but it just felt cringy.
The gore was alright although I think I watched a slightly cut version, or this movie did at least one weird cutaway.
All in all, it's not that good a movie, but if you leave your brain at the door I think you can have a little fun. So I'm rating it 2 out of 5 stars.

Last 10 Top 10 #10 of 2016 - Mubi Special -
I'll try to do a Last 10 Top 10 every 10 movies I watch in 2016. And we reached my 100th movie and by this finished my tenth Last 10 Top 10 of the year. Woohoo.
Another extra: All of the movies on this list are from Mubi, because I felt I don't watch enough movies on mubi, so I decided to watch 10 in a row.
Starting us of with a double pack of music documentaries, I watched Mistaken for Strangers and Anvil! The Story of Anvil.
I put Mistaken by Strangers on Number one because I liked it just a bit more. This documentary, directed by the main guy, is really more about himself. And it was so interesting, it was fun, it was great.
Anvil! The Story of Anvil isn't as good and a little depressing, but still a great time, still very good. I liked it a lot. Both of these I saw without even knowing anything about the bands, you don't need to know anything about them.
My number 3 is a short movie. Dream Work is just masterfully edited, and actually a bit scary. I really liked it, it deserves the number 3 position for sure.
Hawks and Sparrows by Pasolini, who made 120 days of Sodom, is actually a funny comedy. I'm sure there are a lot of things about this movie I did not understand because it is about 1960s Italy, which I know nothing about, but it was still funny and entertaining. Especially considered it is from 1966.
They also had a few German movies on Mubi, the one I decided to watch is Kebab Connection. While having some frustrating scenes and a frustrating ending, it was a fun time and I did not hate it. The Kung-Fu scenes were actually pretty great.
Talking about Kung-Fu: Fist of Fury (aka the Big Boss), as far as I know the first real movie starring Bruce Lee. Sadly, his character swore his mother to not fight anyone, so the first half of the movie is him standing by while other people fight. It was actually an interesting mystery with some great fight scenes, but the dub I saw it in wasn't that good and while some fight scenes were great, others were okay, or even a little bad. So it's only number 6 (on a pretty good list).
Ashik Kerib is by far one of the weirdest movies I have ever seen. The movie was in one language I didn't know, translated by a narrator into another language I didn't know, subtitled in German. That being said, the music was pretty great and everything looked gorgeous, the colors were great. I actually liked it and appreciate it, but it was kind of too crazy for my taste.
FROM THE REPORTS OF SECURITY GUARDS & PATROL SERVICES NO.1 is probably the longest title for a very short movie. This German short without any dialogue is interesting to watch and actually made me feel a little weird. I just couldn't put it higher because, unless a short really blows me away, I can't really put it over full length movies that are good. If you have 11 minutes to spare, check it out yourself.
Orchesterprobe, the third music-themed movie of this list, and the third short movie, doesn't really hold up. It's a comedy short about a weird orchestra where everyone makes fun of everyone. It is okay, but really not that funny.
Last but not least, Destroy Yourselves. I didn't hate this movie. I didn't even dislike it. I just can't rank it with the rest of these movies. It is totally weird, at some times boring, but I guess that's what it was supposed to be. I just put it at 10 because yeah, it's not that enjoyable and not that fun, but I feel like it deserved to be in mubi and is one of the reasons, I got it.
Mubi shows me movies I would never watch otherwise and also, to be honest, never even hear of. I heard of Mistaken for Strangers and Anvil, I knew about the Kebab Connection and Fist of Fury, but I had no idea there was anything like Destroy Yourselves or Dream Work. This experiment was fun and interesting, I watched 7 out of these 10 movies in 2 days, and I realized how much Mubi has to give if you just watch enough of it.
Hope to see you next time, when it will probably be 10 random movies again, including Batman V Superman.
Destroy Yourselves, 1969
I can't even rate this. It's trying to be different, trying to be something you never see. And it succeeds.
It feels very weird and the main character feels, to be honest, quite annoying. I feel this movie is shot backwards, so we start at the end and end at the beginning. But I'm not sure.
I'm not sure about anything in this movie.
This is not a movie for enjoyment. There isn't anything that makes this movie very good, except maybe that it is daring enough to be more than just different. I'm sure every scene in this movie means something, even if it is just a woman staring into the camera for 2 minutes. And for sure that the movie is ending in a boxing match. I just have no idea what.
I don't know anything about the french revolution in May that this movie preceded by one month, being shot completely in April. So I bet there are many things I didn't understand because I didn't understand anything about it's history.
I'm not rating this. It is an interesting watch while also quite boring at some times. If what I wrote seems interesting, you should give it a try.
Dream Work, 2001 - ★★★★
Similar to his earlier movie, Outer Space, Tscherkassy again cut Entity from 1980 into a different movie, different storyline, different feeling.
A woman goes to sleep and has a dream ... or is it a nightmare?
I liked this, even a little more than Outer Space, I think because the nightmare setting feels a little more ... appropriate for this kind of editing.
I love how he was able to cut this out of a (as far as I know) completely different movie.
Of course this is only a short movie with no real plot or anything like that, but it is art. The editing is masterfully done, it feels frightening. I enjoyed it and I'm rating it 4 out of 5 stars.

Kebab Connection, 2004 - ★★★½
The main character of this movie wants to shoot the first German kung-fu film. And by that, this movie became the first German kung-fu film ... kind of.
This was a fun little German comedy. The description got me hooked, it being about a film maker who wants to make a Kung-Fu movie. Sadly it was more about other stuff, like a Turkish guy dating a German girl, getting her pregnant and having to deal with the repercussions from his family while also having to think if he is ready to be a dad.
But that was no problem. It was fun and interesting. The characters were maybe a little stereotypical, but that was okay.
The only thing I can really say I didn't like is the ending. Not gonna spoil anything big but pretty much every problem in this movie is nicely wrapped up in the last 5 minutes, kind of without any reason or work done.
The fight choreography was awesome, something I wasn't really used to from German movies.
All in all a fun movie, I enjoyed it and it wasn't bad. Nora Tschirner is really good in it.
I'm rating it 3.5 out of 5 stars.
Orchesterprobe, 1933
Short little comedy about people in an orchestra having practice. Lots of shenanigans, not that funny anymore, but pretty good for a 1933 comedy form Germany.
Mistaken for Strangers, 2013 - ★★★★½
I watched this one day before a gig with my band, so it was the right movie for the right mood.
This is a documentary about The National, an indie rockband, followed by the singers brother, director Tom Berninger. But it feels like it is more about Tom Berninger himself, finding a meaning in his life. Also, at least a quarter of the documentary is about him making the documentary.
I really enjoyed this a lot and I'm rating it 4.5 out of 5 stars. If you like music, watch it.
Last 10 Top 10 #9 of 2016
I'll try to do a Last 10 Top 10 every 10 movies I watch in 2016. This time actually a few bad ones, or at least not as good ones. as I usually have.
The Seven Samurai was just really good. It is an epic movie and very long, maybe a little too long, but that's okay. Just on a technical level this was the best movie out of these 10 for sure. And it was good.
The Equalizer was the most fun I had this last 10. It is not a perfect movie. But it's really fun to just turn off your head for 2 hours and enjoy the ride. I love movies about people that are just good at something, so this was a great ride.
I wanted to see Blackout for quite some time now. Found the DVD a few months ago and kind of forgot about it, but now I finally watched it. Littlefinger from Game of Thrones and the lesbian daughter of Charlie Sheen trapped in an elevator. It is well shot and has a nice slow reveal, I liked it.
The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain. The movie is a romantic comedy, but also has more to it. It was funny and I enjoyed it.
The story about a group of influential writers, Kill your Darlings, is very interesting. I watched it because it has Harry Potter and Dexter in the same movie. The acting is great and I enjoyed the movie.
The last good movie on my list, Human Traffic, is about partying teens in Cardiff. I felt it really accurately reflected a night of partying, which you don't see often. It showed the bad things, but didn't shy away of showing the good things that happen. I enjoyed it.
Tekken: Blood Vengeance wasn't bad. It just wasn't good either. It was down in the middle and if I wasn't such a fan of the Tekken video games I probably wouldn't have watched it at all. It was pretty middle of the road.
Now to the first part of the Letterboxd Movie Night. Leslie Nielsen's Bad Golf Made Easier is almost on one level with Tekken. It mostly wasn't funny, or what was more funny was the conversation in the chat.
Talking about not being funny, I also watched Hot Bot which I watched because it has Donald Faison in it and was new on Netflix. It was shit. I actually just fought myself through it because I didn't want to have that movie lying there, forever, unfinished. Not worth watching at all. It only doesn't have a half star because it actually looked got, was well shot and had some good performances.
Last but not least, The Galaxy Invader. This was actually more funny than Hot Bot, but not as well done and not intentionally. But the Letterboxd Movie Night made it worth the watch, I really had a good time with this movie but I have to put it at #10, because it is just really really bad.
So yeah, many bad movies this time. My next list is already in the making, it will be my weirdest mix of movies so far. Until then, have a good 10 movies ;)

The Galaxy Invader, 1985 - ½
Watched as part of the Letterboxd Movie Night.
Joe deserves "worst father of the year award". Except for JJ, I think JJ is alright with dad.
Leslie Nielsen's Bad Golf Made Easier - ★★½
Watched as part of the Letterboxd Movie Night.
I don't write reviews to feel bad, I write bad reviews but feel good.

The Equalizer, 2014 - ★★★½
Not a masterpiece, but a really fun time.
This movie is about Bob (Denzel Washington), a 60 year old guy who works at a Home Depot Rip-Off and in his free time likes helping people, walking and reading books in his favorite diner. There he befriends with a Russian call-girl (Chloe Grace Moretz), who is put into hospital by her pimp. That pimp doesn't know that Bob is also a very good killer.
I love movies about guys just being good at something. Like, the master in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. You never have to be scared for him, he just is awesome. Same here, there is almost no scene that has tension that makes you worry for him.
Also I like people just being good guys. And even though he is a killer, he still stays the good guy throughout. What got me the most was how he handled the corrupt cop later in the movie, putting the badge to his face and getting angry at him. You could say it's cliche, but I really liked it.
Washington is awesome. He is great as the nice old man that helps people. I want to meet him and hang out with him. And then there are the sudden changes when he looks like on the cover, where all you can hope is that you have been good.
Moretz also did a great job, I liked her in this.
Some of the fight scenes, especially towards the end, aren't shot that well. It's the typical Hollywood fight shooting where you barely see what's going on, so that wasn't as good.
It's not a masterpiece, it won't be in 1001 movies you have to see before you die, it won't make any big lists, but if you have 2 hours free and want something fun and not too heavy to watch then this is a great movie.
3.5 out of 5 stars and a like.

Hot Bot, 2016 - ★
I'm kind of ashamed I watched this movie.
This movie was new on Netflix, so I checked it out. It has Donald Faison, who of course is Turk from Scrubs, so I'll watch anything he is in. Also I liked Anthony Anderson, so I thought I'll give it a shot.
It is just so bad. In the ending credits, they have outtakes, and Mr "I'm an unfunny version of Jonah Hill from Superbad" even says: "Comedy is harder than Drama". Which is true. And this movie is a perfect example. It was really bad. Also, most of the conflict didn't really make sense.
The movie is about 2 virgin teens (of course) who accidentally hit a ... robot sex-doll with their car, thinking she is a real human and take her with them. Actually, she was going to be delivered to the Senator, but she never reached him, so he wants her back. One of the boys falls in love with the robot. And for some reason the special agents who should bring the robot to the Senator are too stupid to do anything.
I really hated it. I started it some time ago and actually had to stop because I couldn't finish it. But today I thought "fuck it" and finished it. It was horrible.
It's shot pretty well and some of the effects were actually pretty good, that's why I'm rating this movie 1 out of 5 stars and not just 1/2. Don't watch it.

Last 10 Top 10 #08 of 2016
I'll try to do a Last 10 Top 10 every 10 movies I watch in 2016. I was sick so I got to watch a lot of movies, many library rentals. And I went to the flea market.
The Cable Guy was a big surprise. Jim Carrey as a bad guy, wow. Ben Stiller directed, and he did a good job. I liked Matthew Broderick, Jack Black in a small part, but who stole the show was Carrey. This movie is really enjoyable.
I finally got to see Army of Darkness. Bought it on the flea market and watched it right after. I've seen the first two Evil Dead movies some time ago, and even the remake. The only thing missing was Army of Darkness. It was different to the other two movies, but it was just plain awesome. So much fun, so many funny lines. Bruce Campbell is awesome.
The movie about work in a sound studio in that nothing really happens, Berberian Sound Studio, was really entertaining. This shows you can do a movie that is just mood and has nothing really happen, and do it successful. I really enjoyed this, and I love Toby Jones.
Dial M for Murder is the third Hitchcock movie I've seen (not including Hitchcock). It's really good, interesting in every minute, and funny. Not what I expected from Hitchcock to be honest, it's more of a comedy than anything else. I really enjoyed it. Also Giant Telephone.
I didn't expect to like Fried Green Tomatoes. It is one of my mothers favorites, so I watched it with her, in a German dub. It's a "women's movie" is what I heard about it. But it was really good. The acting was good. The characters were interesting. And I liked the message. The main topic of this movie is racism and abuse, and it's put to film really well. It's only #5 because the other 4 numbers are either better movies or movies that are made for me, more fitted to my interests. But I liked it.
My usual documentary per list this time is The Comedians of Comedy. It wasn't anything special, but it also wasn't bad. I enjoyed seeing these comedians making jokes, seeing them travel. Also interesting seeing Zach Galifinakis before he got famous. All in all an enjoyable documentary about the Rockstars of Comedy.
I really don't know if this is the right place to put Don't look now. I see what it did. I liked what it did. It's scary. It's leaving you at unease. It is very well done. But I didn't really connect to it. That's why it's pretty far down. But I still enjoyed it and see why it's famous.
Outer Space, an experimental short movie. Very experimental. Using scenes out of Entity from 1982, the director just went crazy with it. Made a completely new story/short out of that movie. It's very interesting.
Now to the bad ones. Maleficent was beautifully shot, no questions asked. But I just didn't like the story, the way it was done. Also the big change they did at the ending. I just was used to the story and this wasn't it. But Jolie looked really close to the animated Maleficent.
And yeah, I was offended by 300: Rise of an Empire. It looked good (or would have looked great in 3D), but that's about it. The story wasn't interesting, everything was crazy. And it had way more than 300 people for sure. So yeah, it's my Number 10.
That's it for this week. I'm still sick, so let's see how much more I can watch in the next week.
300: Rise of an Empire, 2014 - ★★½
This movie is offensive.
It's set before, during and after the events of 300. We follow the Greeks who also fight against the Persians, while 300 of the Spartans fight Xerxes.
That's about as much story as I got out of it.
This movie is ALL visuals. In 3D on the big screen this is great. But at home, on a normal TV, using Netflix, that sucked. Every time someone bled, I thought "Oh, nice thing to add for the 3D viewers." Because that's what it was. Also, all throughout the movie, there was something flying through the air. Either ashes, fire, anything.
The action was great, but didn't really make sense. Everything was slo-mo. And some scenes were just stupid.
I didn't like this movie, but it was watchable and looked gorgeous, so I'm rating it 2.5 out of 5 stars.
Saturday, March 5, 2016
Army of Darkness, 1992 - ★★★★½
This movie was so much fun. Sure, it's not the best movie ever. It's not scary. It's not even good in that sense.
But it's so much fun. I really enjoyed it. It's close to Braindead, it's just so crazy fun that I can see over everything else happening. I really enjoyed this, and I said that a few times now.
I'm rating it 4.5 out of 5 stars and a like.

Outer Space, 1999 - ★★★½
Remember The Ring?
Let's just say, I expected my phone to ring after this movie was over.
Last 10 Top 10 #07 of 2016
I'll try to do a Last 10 Top 10 every 10 movies I watch in 2016. This week we have another really strong one.
On my #1 we have Duel, the first movie by a little known director Steven Spielberg. Went into it expecting a TV-movie, old-timey and probably cheese. It was none of the above, it was a gripping thriller, kept me interested through its short running time and had me really invested. That's why it's my number 1.
On we go with Wild Strawberries, the second Bergman movie I've watched. I didn't expect a Swedish movie from the 50s to hold my interest but once again, Bergman managed to have me invested and be interested in this story about a road trip by an old guy.
Number 3 is one of the funniest horror movies, especially considering its age. The Raven, looooosely based on the poem by Poe, is just really funny with masterful performances by Price, Lorre and Karloff. Also, Jack Nicholson. Horror legends from the past (Karloff and Lorre), present (Price) and future (Nicholson). I just loved it.
The Passion of Joan of Arc has a special bonus because I watched it in a cinema with introduction by a guy from the church. The movie was really good, but as a spoiled sound-movie watcher I couldn't rank it as high as the other movies so far, even though it might have been as good, maybe even better (especially then the Raven, that's really just as far up because I was really entertained by it).
Sightseers is great. I wonder how Ben Wheatly got the idea for this, it was just great. More comedic than horror, but who doesn't love a small little comedy with a few kills in it?
Indie Game: The Movie is the documentary for this L10T10. It was fun, interesting, and I actually knew about most of those games. I enjoyed it, but it couldn't keep up with the rest.
Batman Returns, the second Batman by one of my favorite directors of all time. But for some reason I couldn't really get into it. I felt bored by it and took several breaks. I didn't hate the movie, but I also didn't love it. It was okay and had some fun things, but it just wasn't for me.
I'm not even sure what to say about the French Connection. I hoped I would like it. But it felt ... very 70s. In times it was slow, and I was watching it with a group of friends as warm up for the Oscars. Also I hate German dubs. I think that all played together. Maybe if I rewatch it some day, I will like it more.
And now we come to the Letterboxd-Movie-Night part of the list, we again watched two movies, first Body Rock, one of the longest music videos I've ever seen. Also one of the weirdest music videos.
Coven would probably have been far more enjoyable if I had seen American Movie, but I haven't, so I didn't get anything out of it at all.
So yeah, that were these 10 movies, hope to see you again in 10 movies ;)
