The One I Love, 2014 - ★★★½

This review has some slight spoilers. I would tell everyone to watch this without knowing anything about it, as that is the most fun.

Romantic Comedy with a twist.

Ethan (Mark Duplass) and Sophie (Elisabeth Moss) are a married couple who don't like each other that much after some time. They go to a therapist who sends them to a special place that helped lots of couples in his therapy. But something weird is going on in that place. There seem to be doppelgangers of them in one house, who are the "perfect" version of them.

Mark Duplass is starting to become one of my favorite indie-actors, I saw Creep, a horror movie with him as the titular character that was inventive and new. This movie is also inventive and something new, and also starring Mark Duplass in a different role. His acting was pretty good, also because he had to play 2 characters.
Elisabeth Moss, who I only knew from Mad Men, is also very good in this, also playing 2 characters.

An impressive part, especially about the acting, is that we have scenes later in the movie with each actor playing 2 characters sitting at the same table. Since we are in the digital age it is really not that impressive anymore to put this together, but the acting is great. Usually when I watch something like this I just look at how they did it and it destracts me a little bit. But in this case it just felt so real and well done that after the first scene I didn't really care. We have a scene where Mark Duplass plays poker with himself and it just blew me away.

Also, as I said probably too much, it is very inventive, not something you usually see in a hollywood movie.
Part of this is probably because this is kind of a mumblecore movie. It got made on a low budget, there are only 3 speaking actors in this whole movie (and some phone calls but I don't count them). Most of the scenes were improvised with just a rough outline about what to say. This makes it feel more real.

I really enjoyed this movie, it's not long and was a nice movie to chill out after I watched the godfather. I rate it 3.5 out of 5 stars and a like.
